Mwandishi Spotlight

Hey friends, here is another awesome author for you who by the way, loved Children of Blood and Bone as much as I did!

Tell us a little about yourself.

Hi, my name is Dax (short for Daccari) and I’m a British author specializing in fantasy and darker fiction.  I currently live in the East of England with my adorable yorkshire terrier-cross puppy and my fiance, Samuel.  When I’m not writing, I love to read, draw, and explore the outdoors.

Have you always wanted to be an author?

Ever since I was small, writing was the only real way (besides sketching) I had of expressing myself. I didn’t make friends easily and, having an idealist mind, I sought to create new worlds that would inspire me and keep me entertained.  From then on, writing quickly became a crucial part of who I am, so yes, I suppose I have always wanted to be an author.

Tell us a little about the last/latest book you’ve written

At the moment, I’m working on my first thriller novel, The Red Man.   It’s about Evylia Wilde, a young girl who, ever since her mother went missing, has been hounded by mysterious dreams. Needing to know more about her mother, she seeks answers.

Her father always told her that the past is better left alone. Perhaps he’s right.

Where did you get the inspiration for this particular book?

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had flashbacks of particular memories, most of which I’m only just now coming to understand.   The particular kind of mental distress that flashbacks can cause is fascinating, if not morbid when you experience it internally so I really wanted to share that in a way that others can hopefully understand.

On average, how long does it take for you to write a book?
If I’m writing a full length novel, then it does usually take me the best part of a year to complete.   However, I recently adopted a new way of drafting my work that, in the future, will allow me to write much more in a much shorter period of time.  Hopefully, I’ll be able to finish future novel between 7 and 9 months.

Do you have any unpublished/unfinished scripts?

I do have several unpublished scripts. I wrote 8 novellas during my teenage years but never released them to the general public as I only decided to begin writing for others at aged 21 (around 4 years ago now.)

What types of books do you read?

I love to read fantasy novels. Give me The Sword of Truth series, by Terry Goodkind, or the Harry Potter Novels by Rowling, and I’ll be set.
I also love to read darker stories, tales of corpses and demons, murderers and werewolves. If it’s dark and dangerous, I’ll be there.

What book are you reading right now?

I actually just started reading The Night Circus. I’d had it sat on my bookshelf for some time. Finally beginning it was like diving into a warm cup of hot chocolate on a winter’s evening.  The prose dances across the page, bringing a very vivid and unusual world to life. I can’t wait to keep reading.

Which are your three favorite books of all time?

Wizard’s First Rule, by Terry Goodkind
Sabriel, by Garth Nix
Children of Blood and Bone, by Tomi Adeyemi

Do you/have you ever read a copy of your book after it has been published?

I tend to wait at least a year after I’ve published a book before reading it but I do love to dive back into the worlds I’ve created.  I think it’s good to have some space from your creations for a short while: so much work gets poured into them that sometimes I just end up associating my books with, well…work.  When I read, I want to shed the stress of the day away.

What advice would you give to an aspiring author who is just starting out?
I would say, don’t listen to everything you hear when it comes to writing. Many people in this industry will try to steer you wrong and may not even know that they’re doing it.  Focus on learning how to be your own developmental editor, to learn what stories are at their core.   Share your own experiences wherever you can by crafting a story to show how you learned a certain life lesson. Try to connect with issues that are important to people, universally.

Do that and keep setting yourself weekly/monthly goals and I honestly don’t think you’ll have anything to worry about.  Ultimately, just live in the moment. The same goes for while you’re writing. Feel what you’re writing and pour passion into the core story.

Thank you for allowing me to be part of this interview. It’s been lovely speaking with you.
